Part of a series exploring inner states through filmmaking, Hesitation examines the fears and imagined consequences behind difficult choices.

The work grew out of the artist’s own uncertainty while preparing to make her first video work in years; hesitation itself became a way of observing the hidden fears around both success and failure. Working with artist Catalina Perez, Gwen Sierra translates these internal states into action using objects from their immediate surroundings, while manipulated colour reflects the inner instability of the decision making process.

What began as an obstacle became part of the method: fear was not something to overcome, but something to work with.

Hesitation was located at The Melbourne Art Loop, Australia, a new, permanent city gallery featuring fifteen state-of-the-art LCD screens and five projector portals suspended along the laneway in Melbourne Central’s Lower Ground precinct. Changing regularly and projecting continuously, each exhibition will include artworks by internationally renowned, emerging and established Australian artists.
