Counterpart is a study of the other as a reflection of the self, a version of one’s own likeness that is recognizable, but not quite bound by the same limits. It borrows the logic of dreams where the self can gain abilities it doesn’t have awake: see further, know more, move outside the rules of ordinary time. This series treats the counterpart as that dream self made visible.
The horns mark the moment the figure stops being purely human, and other objects in the images work the same way: tools of heightened perception, states of sleep or half consciousness.
Through doubling, gesture, and repetition, the line between self and counterpart wears thin, until it’s unclear which one is really doing the looking.
Made on Polaroid, the encounters stay physical and immediate, so this other self isn’t just pictured, it feels briefly, actually present.
